Receiving updates or notifications about an unknown bank account is alarming. Not too long ago, the State Bank of India (SBI) came out with specific guidelines for people to deal with the situation effectively without falling for any phishing or scams. Whether due to mistakes in registration or scam attempts, it is crucial to act quickly and with caution. The bank warns that people receiving such messages associated with an unknown account must contact the bank at the earliest. Authentic communication should be used such as the official customer care numbers of SBI or handles of social media like @TheOfficialSBI on X (formerly Twitter). A screenshot of the messages and numbers would help the bank in resolving the issue.
In a social media response to a customer query, SBI recommended using direct messages on X to provide details. The customer was also directed to visit the official site of SBI for more information or to address concerns regarding debit/ATM cards or bank accounts.
Steps to Stop Notifications from Unknown Accounts
1. Verify the Authenticity of Messages
Not all messages you receive may be genuine. Most phishing scams appear as legitimate bank alerts in their attempt to scoop up your personal details. Always verify the authenticity of the message's source.
2. Report to SBI
Report your concerns to the bank through designated channels. SBI's social media support team or its phishing email reporting address, report.phishing@sbi.co.in can help probe the facts.
3. Do Not Disclose Any Private Information
Do not ever send personal information, OTPs, or account details to unsolicited messages. Never click on any unverified links sent via SMS or email.
4. Mobile Registration Issue
Sometimes, such messages might also be due to a mobile registration mistake. Check if your phone number is correctly updated with the bank to avoid this problem.
The threat of phishing is always high and the SBI keeps reiterating its advisory against fake messages. There are various texts floating around which inform users to update their PAN numbers or verify accounts otherwise, the account will be deactivated. Common tactics the scammers use to collect details.
According to the government-run PIB Fact Check, SBI never asks for personal or banking information over SMS or calls. The said incident needs to be reported immediately.
How to Keep Your Banking Information Secure
• Only through authentic portals and not through shortcuts, log in to the net banking services of SBI
• Cross-check customer care numbers from the official website of SBI before dialling
• Immediately report the suspected scam to SBI and all relevant authorities
Be careful and follow these instructions to protect your financial information and prevent unauthorized access or potential fraud. Make sure to report these as well in case they are an error or someone's bad attempt at hacking; this will protect your data and finances.
