My parents moved in with me a few years ago and now both of them are deceased. I know that they have a bank locker in Agra and also a house which has been let out. I am the only child, what legal issues should I sort to access and operate the locker?

Normally, bank accounts and lockers require the account holder to mention the nominee for their account. According to the Reserve Bank of India guidelines, when both or all the joint locker holders die, access to the locker may be given to the nominee. In such cases, a death certificate and identification proof of the nominee are the only documents that are required. Assuming your parents did not leave any nominee mentioned with these accounts, in which case where there is no nominee/s, access to the locker may be given jointly to the legal heirs of all the deceased locker holders. In such cases, only a death certificate and proof of legal representation need to be submitted to the banker. You should approach your bank branch and understand from them the documentation needed and support the same to access the account and the locker.
