Indian Weddings are seldom a small affair. With wedding season on, the display of wealth and traditional fervor takes Indian families by storm, so much that some risk going overboard. One wedding in Uttar Pradesh’s Siddharthnagar district has taken the festivities to another level. A video that has now gone viral shows the groom’s family showering cash worth Rs 20 lakh in the air for villagers to collect.

The events, from the wedding of Afzaal and Armaan in Devalhawa village, featured guests tossing Rs 100, Rs 200, and Rs 500 notes from rooftops and even from a JCB machine. The viral footage shows villagers scrambling to grab the cash flying in the air, creating a scene that looks both chaotic and celebratory.

It has sparked mixed reactions among netizens and some seem amused by this display of the wedding procession. Many, on the other hand, are questioning the need for such a display of wealth.

Social media handles sharing this video are abuzz with comments that vary from admiration to outright criticism. As a user writes, “What a waste of money”. Those criticising the act point out how such sums could have been used for charitable causes. Some even pointed out the societal pressures that lead to such extravagant displays, calling it a “vulgar display of wealth”.

However, some defended the family’s actions, as a user wrote, “If they can afford it, why not? Who are we to judge?”

While grand weddings have always been a part of Indian culture, events like these highlight the growing disparity between celebrations and financial realities.

The video has reignited debates about how much is too much when it comes to Indian wedding celebrations. For some, it is a joyful moment of sharing and celebrating the coming together of families in an extravagant way. For others, it is sometimes a stark reminder of widening inequalities and misplaced priorities.
