All through 2020, the pandemic has ushered in a new way of living, where thinking about the health and safety of oneself and the family is the basis of all decision making– be it is stepping out, buying a new appliance, or taking up a new hobby. Recently the trend of incorporating advanced health technology in home appliances has made our chores easier while helping us maintain hygiene and health. The consumer appliance industry has gone through some interesting transformations during the pandemic, from air purifiers to air conditioners with UV technology. But like with any new technology, the home appliances with health tech features have witnessed some scepticism among consumers. Below are some myths debunked to help you understand these technologies to build a smart and healthy home in 2021:

  1. ACs spread viral infections: Can you imagine being locked up at home during the pandemic, without an air conditioner? Besides helping us through the hot summer months, nowadays ACs can be used throughout the year to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Despite all the benefits, there have been misconceptions about the functioning of ACs. During the initial months of the pandemic, there were questions raised on whether the spread of the COVID-19 virus is accelerated by Room Air Conditioners. To address this concern, several studies conducted across the globe as stated by the authorised bodies, state that while low temperatures (7–8 °C) are optimal for airborne influenza survival, the survival of this virus decreases progressively at moderate temperatures (20.5–24 °C) and even further at higher temperatures.

Hence, if room air conditioners are used correctly, it will not just ensure safety from this virus but also provide comfort for its users; especially in extreme summer conditions. The authorities had also shared some COVID-19 compliant guidelines for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems that make air conditioners safe to use in the pandemic

  1. An air purifier cleans dirt along with killing allergens: Often, the functions of an air purifier are misinterpreted. True to its name, an air purifier only purifies and effectively eliminates volatile organic compounds such as mold, pollens, pet dander, and dust emitted from the carpets, curtains, paints, and cleaning products along with particles. However, air purifiers cannot clean any dust or particles that settle on surfaces like carpets, floors, kitchen tops, or furniture. One should clean the exposed surfaces at home regularly to help have clean air indoors along with using an air purifier.

  1. Dishwashers cannot tackle bacteria: Many people think that dishwashers are not sufficient for killing microorganisms present on dirty dishes. However, dishwashers can clean food residue or solid particles left on plates and fight bacteria that may have formed them. When heated to high temperatures, water in dishwashers can help fight any lingering bacteria, leaving your cutlery, dishes, and glasses clean and disinfected for the next use. This is also why you cannot wholly rely on hand-washed dishes to be bacteria-free.

  1. Microwaving takes away nutrients from food: A lesser-known fact is that nutrients break down when exposed to any form of heat. It has nothing to do with heating food on a stove or in a microwave. Cooking food in liquids such as water can also leach out the nutrients from the food. Microwaving food is a much quicker and simpler process of reheating food. Contrary to the belief, microwaves preserve more nutrients while heating food than conventional methods.

  1. Fruits and vegetables are fresh only for a week in a refrigerator: With evolved technology, refrigerators have become much more advanced and can keep fruits and vegetables fresh for up to 30 days! This means your trip to the supermarket can not only be less frequent now, but you will be cooking with fresh veggies for all your meals. Some refrigerators are equipped with technologies that lock in the freshness by minimising temperature fluctuations and keeping moisture levels steady. Some of these refrigerators come with active fresh blue light technology that creates an anti-bacterial atmosphere inside refrigerators. It keeps fruits and vegetables full of flavour and nourishment long after they’ve been stored in the fridge.
