I am moving from Delhi to Bangalore. In Bangalore I will have to get my car re-registered with a new number. What will happen to my car insurance policy?

Pushpa Nair, Bangalore

There is no clear law that emphasises the need to re-register your car in another state, because you have moved in there. You have a 1-3 month window to ride your car in a new state without changing the registration. You will need to get the pollution check and any necessary compliance specific to that state when riding your car. As for your car insurance, it can be taken anywhere in the country for the usage of the car throughout the country. The policy will continue to provide you insurance cover. However, once you have changed the registration of your car, you should get the same endorsed in your existing insurance policy for continuity and its validity. As the car number is mentioned in the policy document, any change to the car number should be effected in the policy document once the registration number is changed.
