What is the age limit for acquiring health insurance?
Giridhar Kini, Udipi
Most insurers start offering health insurance policies at the age of 5 years for individuals. The upper age limit for the public sector companies and some private companies is 80 years. Some private players, however, offer medical policies only up to 70 years of age. Normally no insurer accepts any new proposal beyond the age of 70 years unless they are totally convinced about the health status of the proposer or have a policy that is exclusively for senior citizens. If you have taken a policy before you turn 70, it is normally renewed for your lifetime, unless the terms and conditions stipulate an early closure. However, for family package policies and group health insurance policies, children between 3 months and 5 years of age can also be covered provided one or both parents are covered concurrently.
