I lost my grandfather recently. We know that he had life insurance but we are not able to find the policy document. Is there any way to find his policy details and file the claim?

You are in a tricky situation if you do not have the policy document. However, all is not lost as you could try one of the following to trace the policy particulars. First, check your grandfather’s bank statements and cheque book counterfoils as, generally, insurance premiums are paid through cheques. Second, you can try to find out if your grandfather was in touch with an insurance agent, which could lead to figuring out the details of the policy. Third, these days most banks also provide life insurance cover. So the banks with which your grandfather maintained accounts can also be contacted. If there was a chartered accountant or lawyer engaged by him to execute his Will, you would be able to get the details out of them. These days’ insurers send updates to policyholders on the registered mobile phones, so you could look up your grandfather’s mobile records to check about the policy you are sure he had as well.
