Unfortunate to hear about your mother’s demise, but to change the nominee on your life insurance policy, you do not need the consent of your mother. Nomination basically identifies the person who will receive the policy money if the policyholder dies. You, as the policyholder can revoke or change the existing nomination without the consent of the stated nominee. Further, the nominee receives the policy proceeds on behalf of the legal heirs of the deceased.

If the nominee dies before you, the policyholder, the nomination becomes ineffective. Just check with your insurer on the form to change the nomination on your policy and you should easily manage to get your wife as the nominee on the policy.
