Do health insurance policies cover plastic surgery?

Nita Pillai, Kochi

Typically health insurance policies do not cover expenses arising out of elective, cosmetic or plastic surgery done under normal circumstances. This means that if a person gets a plastic surgery done to improve their facial structure, the expenses incurred will not be covered.

There is only one condition under which plastic surgery expenses are covered; when the surgery is done to correct a distortion due to an injury caused by an accident. However, do check in the terms and conditions of the policy, especially the exclusion list, as rules for even such covers vary from insurer to insurer.
