Two years ago I bought a Mediclaim policy with Rs 5 lakh cover, which covers me and my wife. We have not raised any claim so far on this policy and wish to increase the cover to Rs 10 lakh, as we are both senior citizens now.

As one gets older, health-related risks go up and the need for a health insurance policy is a must. You could check with your existing insurer about increasing the scope of cover on your existing policy, which is generally allowed based on your past claims and at the time of the policy renewal. If you and your wife’s health condition is normal, instead of taking additional cover, you could go for a top-up cover, which gives wide protection at a very affordable premium instead of having a full base cover for Rs 10 lakhs. Do understand how top-ups work, because there are variants within this one and they come into play only after you have exhausted the threshold policy cover on the base mediclaim policy that you already have.
