My foreign travel got cancelled because of a family emergency. Can I cancel my overseas mediclaim policy and claim a refund?

Although you can claim a refund of premium when you cancel your policy, the insurer may retain a minimum sum as cancellation charges. However, insurers do have a minimum notice period, within which you are expected to inform them about the change in plans and the requisition for policy cancellation. This notice period varies across insurers, so do check for what is mentioned in your policy document. Also remember that the insurer may not entertain a refund request if a claim has been lodged or you intimate about the cancellation of the policy after the policy commencement date.
