Ratan Tata, the veteran industrialist and renowned philanthropist, who passed away on October 9, 2024, has left behind a legacy that stretches beyond business. The same has been reflected in his Will where Tata made special arrangements to ensure a lifetime of care for his pet dog, Tito, a German Shepherd, the Times Of India reported. While such examples are common in Western countries, this gesture by Tata sets a rare precedent example in India of leaving something behind for pets.

Tito, who Tata adopted after the passing of a previous dog with the same name, will continue to be cared for by Rajan Shaw, Tata’s long-serving cook. The Will guarantees that Tito will live comfortably and his well-being is ensured. Moreover, Tata also ensured that his butler, Subbiah, who served him for over 30 years was also provided for as per the arrangements of the Will.

Tata’s Love For Animals: Many Examples of His Compassion

Ratan Tata’s affection for animals has been well-known over the years. He built his family among them. In 2018, he converted the Bombay House - Tata Group’s headquarters - into a shelter for stray dogs. This allowed them free access to a warm, comfortable space. Tata also inaugurated India’s first advanced pet hospital in Mumbai based on his belief that “pets are family their lives matter to every pet parent”.

One of the most popularly known anecdotes regarding Tata’s love for his pet dog goes back to the time when decided to skip a prestigious event at Buckingham Palace in 2018 to tend to an ill Tito.

What Does Ratan Tata’s Will Entail?

For Philanthropic Proceeds: Tata’s Will also notes the transfer of significant portions of his assets to the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation (RTEF), founded in 2022. The idea behind leaving this must be Tata’s intention to continue supporting philanthropic activities through the medium of this charitable trust.

His shares in Tata Sons and interests in other Tata Group companies such as Tata Motors will transfer to RTEF under the guidance of N Chandrasekaran, the Chairman of Tata Sons. This foundation supports non-profit ventures and has made notable investments. Moreover, according to some reports, his startup investments through RNT Associated and RNT Advisors will be sold whereby the proceeds will be transferred to RTEF.

For Family: Tata has made arrangements for his close family as well including his brother Jimmy Tata, and half-sisters Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy. The Will also included something for his close aide, Shantanu Naidu, with whom Tata has collaborated for investment in the ‘Goodfellows’ startup. Ratan Tata has relinquished his stake in the firm and has waived off the loan that supported Naidu’s education abroad.

However, the future of Tata’s iconic properties such as his Halekai house in Colaba and his bungalow in Alibaug remains undecided. Tata's collection of 20-30 luxury cars may be transferred to a Tata Group museum in Pune or could be auctioned off. His many awards will find a home at the Tata Central Archives as a testament to his leadership and contributions to the business and society.
