Vehicle owners must know the crucial updates to the FASTag system that take effect starting today, i.e., 1st August 2024. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has laid out new guidelines concerning Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements and the maintenance of FASTag details. These changes which are designed to make the toll payments smoother and more reliable come with a deadline which is set for October 31, 2024. Therefore, you should not wait to complete these requirements. Let’s understand these changes in detail.

What are FASTags?

FASTag is a device that employs Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for making toll payments directly while your vehicle is in motion. The FASTag affixed on the windscreen of your vehicle enables you to make toll payments directly from your account linked to FASTag.

The FASTag helps save fuel and time as the customers do not have to stop at the toll plaza.

What are the new changes for FASTags?

The two key changes in FASTags guidelines are associated with updating your KYC requirements and vehicle linking details.

1. KYC Update: Vehicle owners need to update their KYC details for FASTags issued between three to five years ago before October 31, 2024. Providers will reach out to you regarding the same, upon which you should comply within this period to avoid service interruptions.

Also, If your FASTag is older than five years, you must replace the same. This means vehicle owners should check their tags' issuance dates and replace their outdated FASTags.

2. Link Vehicle Details: The new guidelines need you to link your FASTags with the vehicle's registration number and chassis number. This is aimed at enhancing the accuracy and accountability of the FASTag system.

For New Vehicle Owners: If you have purchased a new vehicle, you should update your registration number with the FASTag provider within 90 days of the purchase date.

Other changes per the updated guidelines are:

1. Verify Your Data:

- FASTag providers need to verify and update their databases regularly which also includes ensuring that the linked vehicle details are accurate and up-to-date.

- As for vehicle owners, you must upload clear photos of your car's front and side, making it easier to verify the vehicle associated with the FASTag.

2. Link Mobile Numbers: Each FASTag must be connected to a mobile number which facilitates seamless communication and updates regarding the FASTag account, including notifications and alerts. Make sure your mobile number is linked to your FASTag account so that you don’t miss out on important updates.

You should not wait until the last minute (October 31, 2024) to complete these requirements, as failing to update KYC details or replace outdated FASTags would cause inconveniences for you to use toll plazas efficiently.
