The Cost Of Nurturing

Education has become an expensive affair and the rising cost of higher education is making it increasingly difficult for middle-class parents to provide quality education to their children. The Cost Of A Career in the November 2023 issue highlights and gives solutions comprehensively. I am an expecting father and I found the issue very informative. The high inflation in education is an eye-opener. Thankfully, increasing awareness about scholarships have made it a bit easier for parents seeking education abroad for their children, and even in diverse fields like sports like In Their Own League (November 2023) mentions.

Social Bonds

Social bonds serve a two-fold purpose, both for the investor and the government. The government gets to pool in money from the public to use it for welfare needs. It is actually needed in a country like India where inequality in wealth distribution continues to exist. It was sad to know that its value increased 10 times in 2021, but declined in 2022, as the explainer in the November issue highlighted.

Festive Investing

The festive season is a good time to buy stocks. Personally, I have been taking part in the muhurat trading of the stock market on the day of Diwali by investing a token amount in a few stocks. The article, 10 Stocks To Light Up Your Portfolio, November 2023 issue, was particularly helpful in that regard. Though I typically invest in bluechip stocks and rarely in mid-caps and small-caps, maybe it makes sense to look at stocks of the emerging small companies as well.

Interview

The interview with Neelesh Surana, chief investment officer, Mirae Asset Investment Managers, was quite insightful. He gave an overall insight on the global economy, the resilience shown by the Indian equity market, despite adverse global economic macroeconomic conditions, such as high interest rates, rising crude oil price, the need for investors to think for the long term and not to discontinue their systematic investment plans over market volatility in the short term, and, lastly, to keep a broader picture of the entire economic scenario. The fact that he advised investors to remain optimistic about sectors that are expected to benefit from a broader domestic economic recovery, specifically caught my attention. His views on IT and industrial sector and positive outlook on healthcare sector helped improve my understanding.
