I have a small design workshop. Recently, a worker was badly injured while working on a machine and I had to meet the doctor’s expenses and also compensate him. Is there any policy that can cover me against such losses in future?

Yes, you can go in for employer’s liability or workmen’s compensation insurance. In case an employer is held legally liable to pay damages to an injured employee or the employee’s dependents, he can claim this amount against his employer’s liability insurance policy which will provide him the required cover. In addition, it will also pay certain expenses such as lawyer’s fees and doctor’s charges. The intention is to ensure that the employer does not suffer financially and is compensated in case of a claim. The policy covers damages arising out of injury and doesn't cover damage to the employee's property. Workman’s compensation insurance covers the liability of the employer towards an employee under the Workmen’s Compensation Act, 1923.
