Generally, health insurance covers treatment in hospitals or day-care centres. For the purpose of insurance claims, hospitals are defined as registered under the Clinical Establishments Act, 2010, or meeting minimum criteria of 10 to 15 beds depending upon the town size and having round the clock nursing staff. However, in certain cases where the insured is not in the position to be taken to a hospital or the lack of access to a hospital, domiciliary treatment is allowed. Some insurers also offer OPD cover these days, but this comes with limits on the payout on the claims raised.
