Mutual fund (MF) industry body, Association of Mutual Funds in India (Amfi), in a proposal sent to finance ministry wants Finance Minister (FM) Nirmala Sitharaman to bring parity in tax treatment of investments in different financial sectors in the upcoming Union Budget 2022-23. The first two proposals are on bringing tax uniformity for financial products of same nature. For instance, debt mutual funds and listed debt securities are treated differently on taxation aspects despite being similar in nature. Similarly, equity mutual funds (MFs) get different tax treatment than unit-linked insurance plans (Ulips) offered by insurance companies.
